Stihl 028 Chainsaw. Even though the Stihl 028 chainsaw was first introduced over four decades ago it remains a really popular saw. It’s renowned for being a tough, virtually bullet proof and easy to use chainsaw. Of course because of it’s venerable age it does lack some of the more modern technical and safety features of Stihl chainsaws. This Stihl MS 271 Farm Boss® Chainsaw is a high performance, fuel-efficient chainsaw that comes loaded with features and technology. It starts with a highly efficient engine that delivers 20% longer run times between refueling, while cutting exhaust emissions in half (comparisons made to the Stihl MS 270 chainsaw.). I picked up a used Stihl (70/80's) Farm Boss 041 Chainsaw. Looks very clean for older one but.fires up and only can keep running about 30 sec. It evebtually loads up with gas and dies! Standard features

Pre-separation air filtration system
The innovative long-life air filter system greatly extends the service life of the filter. Air routing removes larger particles of dirt, meaning the actual filter has less to do. So the saw can be used for longer without having to clean the filter.
Decompression valve
The decompression valve is part of the easy start-system. The valve should be pressed before starting in order to reduce the compression pressure when starting, as well as the effort needed to pull the starter rope. The decompression valve is semi-automatic, meaning that it must be pressed manually before starting, but then closes automatically.
Advanced combustion technology
Four overflow channels swirl the fuel-air mix before ignition, allowing for optimum combustion and highly efficient performance. The result: lower consumption and high torque across a broad rpm range.
STIHL anti-vibration system
Intense vibration at the handles of power tools can lead to longer-term effects of blood vessels in the hands and arms. STIHL have therefore developed an effective anti-vibration system where by the oscillations from the machines engine are dampened which significantly reduces vibrations at the handles.
Compensator
This controller in the carburettor prevents the fuel-air mixture getting richer as the air filter becomes clogged. The correct quantity of fuel is delivered to the carburettor depending on the quantity of air passing through the air filter. This keeps the fuel/air ratio in the combustion mixture constant and hence also the engine power. The filter doesn't need to be cleaned until an appreciable drop in power occurs. Controlled-delivery oil pump
The exact chain oil output can be adjusted maunally for varying conditions, allowing for a reduction of up to 50%.
Single-lever master control
All important functions such as start, choke, throttle and stop are operated via a single lever.
Side-mounted chain tensioning
The tensioning screw is located on the side of the chain saw through the sprocket cover. Chain side tensioning allows the saw chain to be retensioned effortlessly, avoiding any contact with the sharp chain.
STIHL Ematic-System
The Ematic chain lubrication system ensures pinpoint lubrication of the saw chain links and guide bar rails. When used with STIHL OILOMATIC saw chain, it will provide maximum lubrication, longer wear and less oil consumption than conventional methods of chain lubrication. The Ematic system can reduce bar oil consumption up to 50%.
Tool free fuel caps
Special caps on the fuel and oil tanks are designed for easy opening and locking without the need for tools.

STIHL ElastoStart
STIHL ElastoStart reduces the shock caused by the compression of the engine during starting. The compression shock is taken away from the users joints and muscles through a spring or rubber element in the starter handle.

Of course because of it’s venerable age it does lack some of the more modern technical and safety features of Stihl chainsaws.

The Stihl 028 was first introduced around 1977 and many of these saws have had very long, productive lives.

Who is the Stihl 028 Suitable For?

A well maintained Stihl 028 is the perfect chainsaw if you are looking for an easy to use saw. It’s a perfect homeowner saw for cutting firewood or general property maintenance.

Stihl 028 Chainsaw Features

The model was so popular that Stihl revamped it more than once. Improvements were made to replace the mechanical points ignition and add anti-vibration mounts.

The power head is largely constructed from metal alloy so the 028 is a good few pounds heavier than an equivalent modern saw. It might be a little overweight by modern standards but at 12.6 lbs the 028 is still light enough for anyone to use easily.

Stihl 028 Availability and Spares

Be aware that saws purchased before 1986 are not covered by the Stihl lifetime warranty on ignition parts that Stihl operated from 1986 until 2003.

Used 028’s are still widely available on Ebay and other classified advertising sites.
